Smiled to the Rising Sun

Today felt like the first day of spring
We shared our morning dance
cheek to cheek
You holding on with one arm wrapped around mine
and the other grasping my shoulder
pushing your face tight to mine the entire time
for one song and then two

"Three little birds
Pitch by my doorstep
Singin' sweet songs
Of melodies pure and true,
Sayin', ("This is my message to you-ou-ou:")
Singin': "Don't worry 'bout a thing,
'Cause every little thing gonna be all right."

I brought you outside and you smiled wide
and gasped in glee taking in the grassy world

You pushed your walker
and crawled free along the sidewalk
We brushed leaves off the plants and
looked at the green stalks rising anxiously
and together we saw the first spring flower
beaming proudly to the sun

We walked to the playground
I held you in my lap
and pumped my legs stronger
so we could fly higher in the air on the swings
as you laughed hard and loud
at us bobbing together
with the neighborhood
splashing below

We walked Hero
and saw a little boy
swinging back and forth on his stomach
in a tree swing outside his house
and you smiled at him
and i thought...someday, that will be you

You looked up
and saw geese flying in formations overhead
pointing and making noises back at them
and I prayed
so thankful
because these are our days
no schedules, no practices, no siblings, no work
nothing but us together greeting the day with all we have
playing as we please
together
and you sighed back as you slept against my chest
